Lorraine Gray’s enthusiasm for the Whitby Public Library is infectious. For more than seven years, Lorraine, a professional engineer with Hydro One, sat on the Library board—two years as Chair. Lorraine is known as a library champion who has contributed to fostering a crucial community hub for the Town of Whitby. She will be stepping down at the end of this year to join the Boards of Lakeridge Health and Ontario Tech University. We recently met with Lorraine to talk about her experiences at the Library and hear firsthand about the impact of this important role.
Whitby Public Library (WPL): Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. To begin, could you share what inspired you to first join the Library Board?
Lorraine Gray (LG): It was a couple of things. First, I’ve lived in Whitby for over 20 years—about 14 at the time I joined the Board—and I wanted to give back to this beautiful community. I realized that through my professional experience, I had knowledge to offer in helping sustain the Library. Second, I simply love the Library. I love books and reading, and I deeply appreciate the profound impact the Library has on our community. I wanted to learn more about its services and find ways to help support this great institution right here in our town.
WPL: Looking back on your time with the Library Board, what are you most proud of accomplishing?
LG: I had the privilege of serving on the Board during the pandemic—a truly challenging time for everyone. I felt so proud that the Library continued to serve our community despite those challenges. While the Whitby Public Library provides important spaces for connection, it also fosters a sense of belonging. Through the materials it offers—whether new things to learn, topics to explore, or fantastical worlds to get lost in—it remains an essential service. I’m so proud that the Library continues to play such a central role in our community
WPL: Libraries have evolved significantly in recent years. How have you seen our Library grow and adapt to the community's changing needs?
LG: The Whitby Public Library is incredibly thoughtful in how it serves our community. From the programs it offers to the materials it selects—and even through innovative services like the Discovery Zones' sound recording booth—it continuously adapts to meet ever-changing needs.
I’ve been struck by how relevant libraries remain. They provide space for community, access to knowledge, and opportunities for connection that truly “meet the moment.”
At the same time, I’ve also noticed how much doesn’t change: our community’s love for and loyalty to the Library. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to study, to meet new parents, or to explore topics from sewing to travel to inclusion, Whitby knows it can turn to our Library.
WPL: What advice would you offer to incoming Board members or others considering getting involved in public service through the Library?
LG: What a great opportunity—jump on it! It’s not every day you get the chance to give back by working with such an incredible group of individuals who just want to make the world a better place. Everyone involved cares deeply about our customers—the residents of Whitby—and works together to make things even better. My advice: take full advantage of this opportunity to serve your community, learn about an important institution, and make a difference while supporting your neighbour.
WPL: Although you're stepping down as Chair, do you plan to stay connected with the Library in any other way?
LG: I’ll never be far! I’ve been a long-time customer and will always be a proud advocate. Anyone who knows me knows I usually have one to four books on the go at any given time.
One of the Library’s values is Intellectual Freedom, and I love the power of learning and opening my mind to new perspectives. I’ll continue to participate in events and programs, especially the community conversations—which I absolutely love.
WPL: Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say to the community, Library staff, or your fellow Board members as you conclude your service?
LG: Whitby—you have so much to be proud of in your Library. It truly exists for the community. To our amazing Library staff, thank you for everything you do. Your thoughtfulness shines through in every program and every material you select. Your work does not go unnoticed. And to my fellow Board members, I’m deeply grateful to have served alongside you for seven years. It’s been inspiring to witness your dedication to ensuring the Library continues to thrive and meet the needs of our community.
The Whitby Public Library extends our sincere thanks to Lorraine for her dedication and leadership. Her contributions have helped strengthen the library and its connection to the community. As she steps down from the Board, we wish her all the best in her next chapter and thank her for her lasting impact.
The Town of Whitby has posted a vacant board position with a closing date of October 31.
